Metropolitan WiFi Network

• Client / Company: Peru Fly S.A.

• Country: Perú

• Website: http://www.perukite.com

• Solution: Apply the wireless platform of Pre-WiMAX so that:

  • Fixed (Residential) or mobile users can have wireless network access to the Internet with the bay of Paracas.

  • PERU FLY's different offices up to 20KM (12.4 Mi) apart can be interconnected with each other along Peru's coastal region.

  • Heavy traffic of TCP/IP data is supported for the total Internet users and the IP data transfers generated by the office centers of PERU FLY.

  • Maximum quality (QoS) can be provided for communication services such as for telephony (VoIP) and video conferencing (Video IP).

  • Security measures are applied on the wireless network: RADIUS authentication, WEP Encryption (64,128 bit) / WPA1 / WPA2, Firewall, DHCP, NAT, and network management system (NMS).

Peru Fly S.A. has a complete wireless platform that includes a great variety of NETKROM TECHNOLOGIES products: MB-ROMBv2, ISP-CPE500GHP, AIR-AP500GH, AIR-AP100G, AIR-USB100GUH. All of which are interconnected using the 2.4GHz frequency band. However there is an exception, the final end users will use 5GHz connections that will connect with the clients and also act as the principal backbone in-between the cities of San Andrés and El Chaco.

Clients who are distanced from the point of retransmission in El Chaco, will be able to rely on high connectivity and fast navigation transmission rates due to the "Last Mile" wireless connection available on the ISP-CPE500GHP.

Additionally, clients near the LOS will be able to count on optimal services due to direction oriented connections using the AIR-AP100G device.

In a similar manner resident users within the bay of Paracas will be able to enjoy wireless connectivity at great speeds using the AIR-USB100GUH. The device being a plug and play wireless adapter of great gain and performance (500 mW) would integrate and implement easily due to its portability and easy handling.

Project Description

In order to be able to give wireless and Internet services to users situated in the bay of Paracas, NETKROM created two radio links from San Andrés, one operating in the 5GHz band for the connection between San Andrés and El Chaco and the other in the 2.4GHz band for the link between El Chaco and the condominium "The Reserve". Three MB-ROMBv2 multiband devices were then strategically distributed to provide an excellent link connection between the remote locations. (See Figure 01).

The wireless Pre-WiMAX platform can manage a great deal of subscribers and different levels of access, services, and rules; this being in the handling of connectivity that would make it possible to work in different networks by segmenting IP traffic in a way to take the maximum advantage of the transport TCP/IP platform. The wireless equipment that offer network access are made to work at the LAYER 3 of the OSI Model, this way the administration and control of the network is simpler and easier.

Additionally, a wireless HotSpot was also implemented that validates users before gaining entrance to the network using a Radius server, this HotSpot can be administered remotely from the city of Lima, offering IP addresses dynamically by means of DHCP.

Clients with line of sight can surf the net validating their paid subscription with a user and password. If line of sight becomes an issue, the NLOS wireless adapters AIR-USB100GUH can be used to access the Internet and network due to their great power and performance characteristics.

The implementation made on the bay of Paracas can be considered multifunctional because it supports the following services.

  • TCP/IP data and traffic. Granting access to Internet from any point on the bay through the different types of connections and equipments implemented.

  • VoIP traffic by means of the use of digital converters or IP telephones, from the central point of distribution to a remote point in the bay.

The wireless implementation covers 100% of the bay of Paracas, ensuring that even the most distanced away user can have a connection to the network. This is possible because of the strategic placing of equipment and the last mile features.

Due to little congestion in the electromagnetic spectrum it′s possible to rely on an excellent quality of signal. Along with a suitable selection of operation channels available, exceptional speeds on the network and Internet can be guaranteed.

Security is also an important aspect for a communication system. For that reason, unauthorized users are rejected in their attempt to access to the network, this happens due to an implementation of ACL’s (Access Lists), allowing only registered users to communicate with the central control center.

The radio links are protected with the authentication encryption WPA which makes the encrypted connection very secure between the remote equipments, this way only authorized users are the only people allowed on the network, bringing security risks down.

Benefits:

 NETWORKING
  • TCP/IP traffic: Allows wireless, portable, or mobile devices to have network and Internet access at any time of the day regulated by their priorities and their geographic location.
 WIRELESS NETWORKING (WLAN)
  • Remote Wireless Platform Interconnection: Allows the interconnection between two LAN's on different segments to exchange information from one remote location to another.

  • Mobility: The user can choose the place and time where they want to use their wireless capabilities to access the network and to the Internet, taking the correct security measures that will not disclose information and will keep the network safe.

 ADDITIONAL TCP/IP SERVICES
  • Telephony: Centralized voice communication system that allows bidirectional communication between different remote locations by the use of digital converters or IP telephones.

 MAJOR BENEFITS
  • Investment: CAPEX and OPEX expenses are lower in caparison with similar platforms implemented by telephone companies.

  • Superior Upgradable technology: Wireless equipment from NETKROM TECHNOLOGIES have capabilities to be upgraded to WiMAX technologies and are swappable with other frequencies not yet licensed. This is thanks to the abilities the equipments have to easily update their hardware and firmware.
