Rural Wi-Fi Network (Mining Environment)

• Client / Company: MINAS ARIRAHUA S.A.

• Country: Perú (Arequipa)

• Solution: Wireless Platform supporting data, voice and video traffic using TCP/IP protocol and offering a complete Wi-Fi coverage in the work camp of Arirahua mine (MINARSA).

Minas Arirahua S.A. possesses a complete Wireless Platform including Wireless Base Stations ISP-BS500 and MB-ROMBv2, which connect to each other through a 5.8 GHz Wireless Backbone. Premises located in the mine have data and VoIP services thanks to an on-site Wireless Base Station working as a repeater or thanks to a last mile wireless connection using the ISP-CPE500G.

Besides offering great connectivity between LANs, this Wireless Platform allows distributing Internet Access from a VSAT.

Project Description

In order to fulfill the objective, Netkrom deployed a complete Wireless Platform operating at 5.8GHz, consisting of four Wireless Base Stations (models: ISP-BS500 and MB-ROMB v2 ) strategically distributed, offering excellent connectivity to eight different administrative agencies.

Four of these locations get connected to the Wireless Platform using last mile equipment (model ISP-CPE500G) working at 2.4GHz frequency band, since each Wireless Base Station is equipped with MiniPCI cards modules operating in this frequency band (required feature in this project that fits with ISP-BS500 and MB-ROMB characteristics).

Mines of MINARSA

Additionally, a HotSpot service has been deployed in the IT Department so that mobile users (laptops, Pocket PC, etc) can get access to the Internet. The technological infrastructure deployed in the Arirahua mine supports the following traffic types:
  • TCP/IP Data generated by Client-Server computing architecture applications used in every Management Department in the mine.

  • Voice over IP or VoIP, service implemented in a scenario with telephone extensions and Netkrom Gateways FXO of two and four ports. QoS parameters were enabled in the Wireless Equipment to ensure an efficient resource allocation (prioritized bandwidth).
The complete Wireless Platform deployed in Arirahua Mine offers a high level security using WPA2 and ACL’s ensuring the protection of the Data being transmitted via wireless.

Wireless Platform deployed in MINARSA mining site.

Benefits:

 Networking
  • Management Departments Interconnected.- MINARSA’s employees will be able to share information data between their PCs and get access to the servers database avoiding data and programs redundancy. Now, they can have access and share different services as e-mail, web sites, etc.

  • Telephony.- Each Management Department owns a Voice over IP channel, allowing them to use this service at zero-cost.
 Wireless LAN (WLAN)
  • Wireless Platform with outstanding Performance.- Wireless Platform being able to offer wireless connectivity between each isolated LAN in the mining site with a high-level security (Encryption, Authentication and Segmentation of Networks) assigning a specific Bandwidth to the connected Networks (QoS).

  • User Mobility.- Hotspot deployed in the IT Department that will benefit the most needed and critical zones. This service is properly encrypted and authenticated in order to protect the data being transmitted.
 Services
  • Data and Voice using TCP/IP protocol.- Each Management Department in MINARSA is able to use a zero-cost VoIP service eliminating the communication limitations they had before this solution was deployed.
Short-Term Benefits
  • Upgradable to superior Technologies in Peru.- The Wireless Base Stations are upgradable to WiMax Technology or can migrate to unlicensed frequencies bands.

  • Video Surveillance.- Integration of the Video Surveillance Network into the Wireless Platform so that the monitoring process can be done remotely from other Management Departments.
